Another option for craft beer in Taichung is Le Blé d’Or, a German-themed restaurant and craft brewery that offers four in-house lagers. It may not have won my heart like Taichung’s awesome chain of Belgian beer bars, but it’s definitely worth a visit.
It’s a basement sort of place with booths and tables made of barrels.
Of the four beers on tap, I preferred the dunkel. But they also have lager, honey lager, and a wild card “seasonal.”
The nachos — seriously, why do I order nachos at a German restaurant in Taiwan??? — were pretty dismal. But I wasn’t so hungry, they were the cheapest snack on the menu, and I figured How bad could they be? Now I know.
I’ve had a sausage plate here before. It won’t be getting any culinary awards but it went OK with the beers.
For some reason it makes me giggle to see Asians in German clothing. The staff is super nice, but then again you are in Taiwan so that’s not surprising.
A street level/sidewalk bar which I’ve never seen in use, but seems like a fun idea.
They also do sample flights, so that’s nice if you are unwilling to commit to a beer untasted. Final verdict: these are not bad lagers. It was a nice walk from my hotel.
